RESOLUTE!

The brew of the fresh coffee filled her nostrils. She looked outside the café-window. It was still early morning. Uncle Sam had kept his café open 24x7. It was a new day, she realized, of the New Year. She felt upbeat. Didn’t it always happen..every time around this time of the year. The resolute to be a better and improved individual! Only, as the year crumbles by especially towards the end…everything gets conveniently forgotten.

Well..not this time. She decided. She won’t be like others. She’ll stick to the plans she had made. They were bright and big, waiting to be fulfilled.

FINDING LOVE AGAIN...

Wander she did. Astonished she was. Complete she felt.

She wandered for miles aimless. She had no hopes for the future. Love eluded her yet again. She wanted to move on. Packing her bags, she set forth; on a new journey. A new beginning; which she wanted to live on her own terms and only for her. No one else mattered, none she cared for not even her beloved kitty. She left those feelings far behind; buried deep, she wanted to forget.

And then, she met him. He taught her love again. She resisted, but her heart pleaded just one chance. And, the heart proved right.

WHY WOMEN SHOULD SPEAK AGAINST SEXUAL VIOLENCE

#KnowYourRights
..¸¸.•*¨*•♫♪¸¸.•*¨*•♫♪¸¸
Recently, I was going through an article that mentioned sexual violence is not just limited to physical harm, but it also includes - stalking, harassment, voyeurism etc, and my mind immediately flew back to the time when I was just a teenager. The amendments to the law were apparently made in the year 2013, and I couldn’t help but wish it was done much earlier.

As a school-going teenager, I faced lots of harassments like stalking and eve-teasing incidents, which used to scare the hell out of me. They were mostly done by the neighbourhood boys, who had made my movement in the locality nearly impossible. Passing obscene and lewd comments, following me around etc, were a daily occurrence. I didn’t know much about the law or how to stop these unwanted attention. Of course, I told my parents; but, even they didn’t know if such complaints would be handled by the police if made; besides, those hooligans were mostly teenagers too ( just 2-3 years older than me ). As such, my entire high-school days I had to bear it all; no matter how uncomfortable it made me or how disgusted I felt. Sure, they did not do me any physical harm, but I feel, such people only grow up to be criminals and their crimes grow bigger, if not stopped early on.

With the changes in the law, I breathed a sigh of relief; because, now, even such acts are considered punishable offence. So, anyone who faces similar situations ( as those mentioned ) can report and hope for justice. And let me say it here, it doesn’t happen only when we are young. Such incidents happen to older women too, and its a widespread problem.

We i.e all the women-folk need to know our rights. We need to know that there is help out there; we only have to report it. Education is the key to that awareness. It is mandatory for police - in any station, and not necessarily the nearest, to file an FIR as soon as a complaint is made. The police in question, infact, may be punished if he refuses to take the complaint.

It is important to report such violence because ~

1 – More we report, more aware people become of the problems that glaringly exist, and it doesn’t remained hush-hushed or shoved under the carpet forever.

2 – More people become aware, lesser are the chances of the crime existing. Yes, its true! Awareness can infact lead to its overall reduction.

3 – When you #KnowYourRights, you are more confident in taking precautions for yourselves, as well as others around you.

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL #KNOWYOURRIGHTS AND FIGHT AGAINST SEXUAL VIOLENCE

#KnowYourRights
..¸¸.•*¨*•♫♪¸¸.•*¨*•♫♪¸¸
I spend a lot of time browsing trending twitter hashtags. It is like a 'live' hot-line of sorts, connecting me to all the latest updates around the world; be it any topic. At times, when a subject interests me, I plunge in deep; right into the hot debates/
discussions. It’s very mentally stimulating to say the least, and I absolutely love it.

So, as usual, the other day, I was going through the trending topics, when a very popular name started trending. It was that of a female broadcast journalist ( now an editor in a news channel ). She is mostly known for reporting live from war-zones, considered most dangerous places on earth. I’ve since admired her for her immense guts. She is no doubt brave, and is quite intimidating too – the fierce-feminist type. However, when I checked the hashtag, I was in for a shock. The journalist mentioned, had recently written a book ( autobiographical ), wherein, she has confessed that she was sexually molested when she was very young; and how violated she had always felt whenever she remembered that incident, even after decades since that episode happened. More shocking was, the perpetrator being a close relative of hers. With disbelief, I read certain stanzas from her book that was published in an online news-portal. It described the mental trauma she had undergone. I had never imagined such an incident would’ve ever happened to such a powerful-looking lady. While reading, I realized, behind that façade of bravery on the outside, there was vulnerability too. It changed my entire perspective of that journalist big time.

More so, when in that same hashtag, I saw numerous trolls making snide remarks alleging that she might have faked-up the incident. Of course, she dealt with them sternly. But, it made me wonder, how ruthless people can get. Here was a woman, daring to tell her story out in the public; and some people were not just not believing it, but alleging that it could be false too. If a well-known journalist faces this kind of public reaction, imagine the plight of some unknown person who might have endured same trauma or worse. The female, after the molestation happened, had decided to forget that horrible incident altogether instead of coming out in the open and reporting it. I can understand the situation back in the nineties or before, when that incident occurred – women hardly knew of their legal rights. That journalist, of course came to know of them much later, but was hesitant still, until she finally wrote the book.

So, if an educated woman like her was hesitant to even talk about it for decades, one can only imagine what other women goes through. However, her finally talking about the incident has made us so much aware of one fact now. That even the affluent may have faced such situations, and not just the poor of the society. And this really helps.

My 3 reasons why reporting sexual violence is IMPORTANT

1 – It really helps spread awareness. Like the lady I mentioned; her revealing of the horrible torture she went through, makes us aware that such incidences can occur in any levels of the society.

2 – When the ratio changes from 1 in 100 women reporting, to 100 in 100 reporting such crimes, criminals won’t go scot-free like they currently are.

3 – When you #KnowYourRights, you automatically have a safety net.

In 2013, with new changes in the law; in sexual violence - even stalking, sexual harassment and voyeurism etc, are considered punishable offence and not just physical harm.

( Images - ) Amnesty International has launched the #KnowYourRights campaign, which is a people’s rights educational program aimed at informing people of their basic rights via free educational modules on digital and physical media because knowing one’s rights gives one the confidence to take action. Tell us why you think survivors of sexual violence should come forward to report the crime and not brush it under the carpet.

HAUNTED

The squeaky metallic-sound, followed soon after by the gleeful-shrills of children, woke Nona up. It was past-midnight. Who would be playing at this odd-time now? More noises came in, as though she were in the middle of an amusement park. Only it was her home, and the scant civilization around, were in deep-sleep.

Nona got up from the bed and walked towards the windows. It was dark outside. And then, it came again, the noises! Every night the same noises kept her awake. If only she listened to other's advice - not to buy the house built on that fatal accident-site.

THE POWER WOMAN!

She lives hidden, behind the alleys;
Underneath the shadows, of those daunting sky-scrappers…
She may be poor, and live in shambles, yet,
Its her holding, the reins of humanity that surrounds.
Without her, the place comes to a chilling stand-still,
With even the rich ones, having to bow-down to her mercy!

Groceries to fruits; to veggies, to meat and loafs,
Her little store is like a treasure-trove,
All, dependent on her, to get their daily supplies,
A single holiday by her, throws their lives in jeopardy instant!
The rich ain’t really that powerful, afterall,
For this power-woman is the one
Who holds the key to their survival!

WHY IT IS NOT ADVISABLE TO BUY FOLLOWERS IN TWITTER/FACEBOOK

This world and its dynamics are changing fast. Most of our offline work has shifted online. Everyone of us is online as well. Not to mention, much of the old-world marketing strategies, to woo customers, have gone digital too. As such, everyone is in some kinda rat-race of sorts. With emergence of social-media influencers; for brands, celebrities alone aren't important to endorse products any more. As such, everyone and their entire khandaan wants to be an infuencer these days. And of course, you are considered an infuencer if you have over 1-2k followers or more. Some people are getting desperate in that process, it seems.

The other day, I was looking at some twitter profile of a particular blogger. It had some 900 odd followers that time, with over 20k tweets; and the profile was active from 2009. After 2 days, when I looked at the profile again, it had a whopping 2.5k followers. In just two days??? I wondered. Calculate, if in 6 years you had 900, how come in 2 days, you jumped double that number. Not just that, the next day itself it had crossed over 3k ( now it has crossed 4k too, lol....growing to over 25k !! ). Of course, I got my Detective ND goggles on, and started my investigations i.e checking out the followers. All weird names, they were, from strange countries. So, I got it instantly - these were paid followers! Suspicious, I searched accounts of few other social-media handles of so-called self-acclaimed 'influencers'; who even writes the same in their profile as 'Social Media Influencer'. Their followers too were all weird names.

You can buy followers, both in twitter, facebook and instagram ( and perhaps in other platforms too ). But what happens is, you end up getting in bulk, either bots or followers from different countries - say..Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and other such places. Does it really serve any purpose? Sure, your follower-count looks fat and nice, but do these artificial followers give any genuine returns? For example - will they ever read your blog or try a product you are recommending? That product may not even be available in their country, and why would a BOT buy anything, anyways :s So, you just spend your money fooling yourself. Sure, you may get some ignorant Brands giving you assignments just based on those numbers alone, but will their 'brand-message' actually reach the target audience? No! And, more importantly, do you feel good from within knowing some fake that too bought followers are following you? I wouldn't.

Brands too make mistake of buying followers. At times, they may strike lucky and indeed get a few genuine followers; but what about the other times, when their posts reaches only bots or non-relevant target audience? For example, Facebook feeds are sent to only 10% of a page's followers, for rest, one need to purchase 'promotional/boost packs'. So, if a brand has bought both the followers as well as the promotional booster pack, will it really reach the ones its meant to reach? Highly, unlikely. Isn't it just wasting money in the process?

Its always better to let followers grow organically. It may take time, but at least, you can be sure they are relevant and are genuinely interested in your stuff :-) By the way, do read my post on - How to be a Social Media Influencer - Here!
And holy moly....the blogger's whose follower count went over 25k in just a couple of weeks, is now on a downward spiral. her followers are decreasing and how! Guess, she's not paying up these days, so, the bots are vanishing into thin air...whoah!

#SMWMUMBAI'15

¸¸.•*¨*•♫♪¸¸.•*¨*•♫♪¸¸
My this post is delayed, little intentionally, as I wanted to see if my post was really important or needed. As I received several reminders, it seemed it is. Then, in all good faith, I have a little complaint with the organizers. Just a little, mind you ( as BA continues to be one of the blogging communities I look up to )! Thus, I feel, I can complain a bit ( I'm blogger after all, and I'm supposed to write my experience of the event - this too, comes in 'experience' :D ). So, my point is, if our post was required and also was in the terms of giving a pass to the event, I want to know, why I didn't receive a pass at all? When I went up to register-desk, the people there looked at me weirdly. They hadn't even heard of blogadda, and passed around weird looks amongst themselves. Of course, my name was no-where in the invitee-list as well ( neither in their computers nor in the name-cards ); so, more stranger looks passed between them. I had a similar incident in the last #SMWMumbai event too, but had ignored it then. If the SMWMumbai organizers have partnered with Blogadda, shouldn't they atleast inform those at the reception-desk, that there will be bloggers coming? And, if a seat was booked in our name, shouldn't our name be there in the list to cross-check? I was at a loss for words trying to convince them that I came via Blogadda. And they hadn't even heard of it! I don't know if it happened same with other bloggers too, as I attended only the 1st day. Organizers and partners please look into this, cos' I felt like some gate-crasher! And, now that I'm done with my ranting, let me continue with the post.

My take-away from the event were the sessions by #madeofgreat Marketing head Delna Avari, and Suhel Seth's speech, that was laced with tongue-in-cheek sarcastic humour. The former spoke on great lengths on how they zeroed in on the icon to be the brand ambassador for Tata Motors. Here are some of my tweets on the same.

I liked the oratory skills of both these speakers, and how effortlessly they spoke on their respective topics, without having tele-prompter/script of any sort.

SHOW-OFF!

‘You are a habitual show-off. You can’t go there, it’s dangerous. Not the height, but the creepy-crawlies that are out there, so illustrious in their community; they won’t spare you.’ Tina said, in a sarcasm-filled voice.

‘Then you don’t know me yet,’ Matt replied, looking at the small hillock. She was right, that place was infested with it, but he was no coward. He loved challenges. However, his mind was jumbled with worries. What if…

‘Come on, give up!’ Tina was worried.
As Matt went, Tina closed her eyes. But, when he came back unscathed, she realized, his bravery wasn’t a show-off.

HIS FAVOURITE PIE

Through the window, he'd come everyday,
To get a piece of his favourite pie,
Come spring, summer, autumn or winter,
He knew, his meal would always be there.
Only this time, the freezing cold didn't spare,
Everywhere, those feathered lifeless bodies lay,
Of them, he too was one,
But, in spirit, he did still did come.

9TH ZEE JAIPUR LITERATURE FESTIVAL 2016

¸¸.•*¨*•♫♪¸¸.•*¨*•♫♪¸¸
Here's my own Story and why I wish to be there ~

I am a blogger with two blogs, and most of my time is spent creating content for them. I haven’t kept my blogs strictly 'niched', hence, I’m free to write whatever I want, without anything stopping me. Be it writing fiction, poetry, covering events, doing product or book reviews, travel writing or any random creative outbursts etc, my blog has seen it all. So, one can imagine how addicted I am to writing. Not just a writer, I'm also an avid reader. I simply love books, and it has always been my desire to meet or hear the authors ‘live’, whose book I have read or reviewed on my blogs. Thanks to my blogs, I have covered quite a few book launches and literature based meets as well, and that has given me great insights into the world of publishing ~ the creativity, the struggles, the successes, and also the failures; not to mention the lavish praises or bitter criticisms the authors face, and the behind-the-scenes during promotions & marketing! And as anyone else, I always get inspired for more knowledge. I always yearn to witness the bigger thing, than the last covered; and what can be bigger in the world of literature than the much acclaimed and famed Zee Jaipur Literature Festival itself? After all, who wouldn't want to rub shoulders with the who's who of the literary world, right at the most happening place i.e the festival grounds? I definitely would.

I’ve been hearing about the Zee Jaipur Lit Fest event since many years now, and last year, I couldn’t help but froth with envy when one of my blogger friends said very proudly to me, that she had attended the Jaipur Lit’15. She spoke of all the sessions she attended, very enthusiastically; and I could only just hear her boast away, with my mouth gaping wide in awe. Since then, I had decided, come what may, I’ll definitely try to cover this one, some day.

Well, why just some day, my conscience pinged at me. Why not this time itself i.e the one to be held in Jan 2016, it prodded. And as tempted as I got, I registered myself for the media/press accreditations, the Festival folks were giving out. With me now receiving fresh updates too, about the various aspects of this festival in my inbox regularly, my interest has only been getting more and more spiked everyday, and by many folds.

¸¸.•*¨*•♫♪¸¸.•*¨*•♫♪¸¸

Let me share some of the main reasons ( & attractions ), why I want to attend this literary extravaganza. And also, due to the interesting updates that I’ve been receiving so far about it, I have almost booked the festival-dates mentally already! I only hope fervently now, to also be physically there as well. My fingers are crossed.

So, here are the reasons ~

1. The festival is robust, with a heady mix of international as well as national literary gems. Nobel laureates, local language writers, Man Booker prize winners, debut novelists etc with constant flow of ideas, interactive workshops, readings, talks and debates demonstrating the laurels of literature; and not to mention live music sessions too - the whole event is like a celebration of literature. Greatest writers, thinkers, journalists, historians, poets, novelists and musicians! Who wouldn't want to be there, to soak in all the richness, that too in a city like Jaipur ( in the historic Diggi Palace Hotel ), known for its rich heritage and culture. I certainly would not want to miss it. It’s time for the bloggers to join in too :-)

2. It's a completely free and open for all event. One more delightful reason to just simply register and join in! I love events that welcome all! So, be early to register before it gets house-full - here - http://jaipurliteraturefestival.org/registration
For special interaction with the literary heavyweights though, one might need to buy a special delegate pass, and visit as 'Friends of the Festival'.

3. As mentioned already about who's going to be there - 165 world-class Indian and international authors; making it a spectacular line-up, who will contribute to this event. Some of the jaw-dropping names included are - the legendary Margaret Atwood, Ruskin Bond, Steve McCurry, Harvard historian Niall Ferguson, novelist Anjum Hasan, English journalist Lucy Hawking and Britain’s national treasure Stephen Fry. Hold on, there's more like French Economist and global voice on wealth and income inequality Thomas Piketty, Bosnian American fiction writer Aleksandar Hemon, Israeli author and peace activist David Grossman, among others. Check out the Jaipur Lit site for the whole schedule and speakers!

4. The Jaipur BookMark conference ( for 2 days, at the Narain Niwas Palace Hotel ), running parallel to the festival, is also something to look out for. It is an important business and networking opportunity for everybody working in the books and publishing industry.

5. Not just books, there's celebration of art too, in the form of the 'Ojas Art Award 2016', that recognizes the best artists working in tribal and traditional art. As an ardent admirer of art, it only makes me go ~ WOW, can't miss this!

6. In the five days of the festival, one can not just enjoy the happenings inside the venue, but also outside of it i.e. by visiting the nearby attractions. Jaipur is dotted with a cluster of magnificent forts, museums and palaces. Get the regal shopping experience of antique jewelry, traditional jootis and fabrics. Or indulge in the mouthwatering Rajasthani cuisines like Lal Maas, Dal Batti, Kachori etc, the Festival is sure to leave everyone with tonnes of delightful and enriching memories..

And, I simply can't wait to be there.....
I’ve dreamt and yearned for it all,
To be there in the midst of it all,
Wherein, the greatest of minds and talents meet,
To cherish and savour it all ~
the Zee Jaipur Lit.

About The ZEE Jaipur Literature Festival : [ PR ]
Writers and festival directors William Dalrymple and Namita Gokhale invite authors from around the world to take part in the 5 day programme set against the stunning cultural heritage of Rajasthan in the Diggi Palace in Jaipur. Equality and democracy runs through the festival’s veins placing the greatest literary minds, humanitarians, historians, politicians, business leaders, sportspeople and entertainers from all walks of life on stage together. This free and democratic access to our greatest thinkers and writers is powerful statement in a country where access to world leaders is still the privilege of a few, and creates a potentially life-changing opportunity for audiences from Rajasthan, across India and around the world to rub shoulders.

The festival is a flagship event of Teamwork Arts who produce 24 festivals around the world, led by Sanjoy K. Roy and Sheuli Sethi. In 2015 the ZEE Jaipur Literature Festival extended to bring this unique formula to audiences in London (Southbank) and Boulder Colorado.

BLOGGING VS VLOGGING! WHY VIDEOS IS NOT THE NEW TEXT!

Of late, I been attending many blogging and social-media related offline events/meets etc, whereupon, it has been almost screamed upon us quite literally too ( by almost whoever spoke on the topic ) - that vlogging is the next best 'happening' thing, and that, its gonna replace text-blogging within the next few years! WHOAH! There were many amazing, and almost eye-popping statistics being showed as well, to prove - how vlogging has grown, in popularity, in the recent years. Many new apps, besides the famous video-streaming channels, are indeed growing today by the leaps and bounds world-wide. But, inspite of the hype, I simply do not agree to this claim. Yes, vlogging is growing, but will it completely overtake 'text'? Hell no! I don't think so at all! Atleast, not in India.

The arguement is quite similar to television replacing the print media. Has it replaced, even though initially the threat was there? Maybe, it has affected a bit in the sales, but print media is very much existent today as well, and thriving too. We all love our news-papers in our hands during breakfast, every morning, don't we? I think, both infact ( i.e electronic and print ), co-exist and compliment each other very well. Although, maybe, the television content, that is beamed 'live' is more fresh than the print; which comes one day late, or sometimes days late too especially when there is a bandh or national calamity of any sort. However, with blogging, the content can be as fresh or may be even more fresher than a vblog, considering the fact that vlogging needs editing, and other such technical stuff. Blogging on the other hand, can be published instantly; and, it is also an electronic medium like vlogging, unlike print.

Vlogging can also be a costlier proposition, compared to blogging. Yes, it can be done with a simple phone too, although, professional cameras or high-end smartphones gives far better picture quality. But, what about the bandwidth costs, right? Not everyone can afford the high-speed 3 or 4Gs now, can they?

There is however one more important reason, why I think blogging will never be replaced by vlogs and that is - because, many of us simply love to write - as in really write! And some prefer it anonymously as well. We simply love the idea of thoughts taking the shape of words, and jotting them down; whereas, vlogging is all spontaneous ( although, one can practice many times before recording/streaming ).
Besides, not everyone would want to physically appear in front of others, as vlogging requires. I wouldn't. Infact, I turned down many vlogging campaigns, with good money too - just because I just didn't want to physically appear. I love the anonymity of writing, although, I'm not exactly anonymous. People do know me. And the best part is, in blogging, you can write in your pyjamas too; but, can you appear before the world in them? Hell no! Vlogging, by the menfolk, may become more popular ( as they are not so concious about their appearance ); but, us women, has our own insecurities, don't we? Lol. Except beauty bloggers or very fashion conscious dames, I don't see vlogging catching up with the other female population. What do you think? Agree or disagree?

Tricks where you can do vlogging without personally appearing in the video -
1. Just do a voice over - showing the surroundings or the subject you are talking about.
2. Make a slide-show video. Add music or a good narration, it works too.

Do share if you know more tips! Keep Blogging, and yeah, also Vlogging ;-)

WHY WOMEN ARENT ALLOWED INSIDE CERTAIN HOLY PLACES? WTF!

As the #Sabarimala and Shani Shingnapur controversy heats up, where women ( young and all in case of the latter 5-50 ) are not allowed to enter/touch the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, because they are supposedly 'impure' compared to men, as they have menstruation ( or bad luck will befall ); I was reminded of this article I wrote couple of months ago.

I was reading this particular news article today; wherein it reported, that, even the HC refuses to take a stand on the issue of entry into the Haji Ali dargah, that is strictly barred for women, and I shrugged to myself. We all know how restricted the muslim society is especially for its women, so it didn't surprise me much. Although, I have been lucky enough to have visited the restricted premises, much before it became a stricter norm. And why just muslim, we see discrimination in Christianity too; although, its not as much in religious places as it is visible in the authorities-build up - we've never seen a female Pope now, have we?

Anyway, before we criticise the other communities for being so discriminatory to the women-folk, lets take a look into our own first, sticking strictly to the religious places ( as there's countless discriminations in almost every sphere of life/society ). Recently, I was in Trimbakeshwar, near Nashik ( for Kumbh Mela'15 ), and to my surprise I learnt, entry into the main 'garbh-griha' as it is called, of the main temple is totally banned for women. Whoa...I had thought. Not just that, there's some more smaller temples up the Brahmagiri hills, behind the Trimbakeshwar temple, that is also off-limits for women. It does make me sit and think about the patriarchal society we live in, that is still so much rooted in the past. Some women activists had once tried to enter the Trimbak temple forcibly, but was stopped and didn't succeed much. I wonder, why it got to that in the first place :o

I do understand, in the distant past, due to the fabric our society was built upon, men always got the advantages and privileges compared to women, but in this day and age, shouldn't it be changing? Not that I see.

I haven't researched about other places much, but I'm sure similar restricted zones for women, in holy places, may surely be existing there as well. It saddens me, how women are treated by the men-folk almost like untouchables; and truth be told, I think, it is much due to the fault of the women themselves. Had they not taught a child 'the sense equality', right from its birth ( since a mother - a female, is the one who gives birth and is closest to a child ), such discrimination wouldn't have taken such deep roots, that are practically unremovable now. May better sense prevail for future generations.

PS: My trip to the Nashik Kumbh Mela'15 was more for the spectacle that it is, rather than any religious purpose. FYI, I'm quite Agnostic in beliefs. Read my other blog, for my entire Kumbh experience.

His eyes, enigmatic; as everyday he watched,
From near the kitchen-sink, his favourite spot.
Hurrying as she did; over breakfast, and then, dressing,
For the hectic day, that loomed ahead!
He had so much love for her, as his eyes would swell with pride,
Her achievements, no mean feat, in this men-dominated world.
All alone, she did a man’s job; repairing faulty machines to car-wrecks,
No challenge made her cow down; to no fear did she grovel.

He waited in his same spot, awaiting her usual return,
Little did he know a crash outside, left nothing of her, but her sandal.
